Swanlinbar today is a quiet village, but for over 200 years, it was a thriving, bustling town, with people coming from all over UK and Europe to drink from the spa (or mineral) wells.
These wells contain water that is rich in naturally occurring minerals, such as iron, magnesium or sulphur, as is the case here at Drumod, and it was believed that these minerals gave the water healing qualities.
Recent works were carried out to make the Drumod Sulphur Spa more accessible, with an upgrade of the existing stairwell and the creation of a gentle ramp from the road to the well. Native rocks were used to create a retaining wall to alleviate the steep decline to the open drain to the right. The existing interpretation panel was also updated and additional finger signs installed at road junctions.
